Crowns: The Current Kings of Restorative Dentistry

Most every person who has visited a general dentist throughout his or her adult life has heard the dental buzz word “crown,” but not everyone knows exactly what they are and how they are used. In the world of dentistry, crowns reign supreme as one of the most effective forms of prostheses. Dr. Harry McCool, a Lilburn, GA dentist, is using dental crowns to restore smiles in just two visits!

Dental crowns are caps placed over a patient’s natural tooth in the event that the tooth has been badly damaged or decayed. Dr. McCool offers two types of dental crowns to his patients. The first is a gold crown, which is a comfortable crown used to preserve as much of a patient’s natural tooth as possible. The second option is a a porcelain crown, which is an aesthetically-pleasing alternative to the gold crown and is created to match a patient’s natural tooth shade.

Should Dr. McCool recommend a crown for your restorative dental treatment, he will trim your natural tooth in the first visit and take impressions of your teeth and bite to ensure that the crown fits seamlessly. Dr. McCool will send these impressions, along with your unique tooth shade, to a dental lab that will create a perfect crown just for you! He will then create and place a temporary crown over your natural tooth to be used until the permanent crown is ready for insertion. In the second visit, Dr. McCool will make any necessary adjustments to your permanent crown and place it into your mouth.

Crowns are created to be durable and once they are placed, they can be treated exactly like a natural tooth. With a diligent brushing and flossing regimen, crowns can last for many years!
